Day One : Arrive Mumbai (Bombay): Meeting and assistance on arrival at International airport by our representative and transfer to hotel. Room reserved from 1200 noon.
Mumbai (Bombay): Morning half day excursion to Elephanta Caves. 9 Kms by sea from Gateway of India. A ferry ride across the harbour takes you to Gharapuri - the local name for Elephanta. The famed caves lie about two thirds up the higher of the two hills. The island was named by the Portugese after a great stone elephant was found when they landed there in 16th Century. The elephant now rests at the entrance of the Victoria Gardens in Mumbai.

The Bombay High Court - Mumbai The Bombay High Court was inaugurated on 14 August 1862. Although the name of the city was changed from Bombay to Mumbai in 1995, the Court as an institution did not follow suit and remained as the Bombay High Court. The work on the present building of the High Court was commenced in April 1871 and completed in November 1878. It was designed by British engineer Col. J.A. Fuller. The first sitting in this building was on 10 January 1879. Architecture: Gothic revival in the Early English style. It is 562 feet (171 m) long and 187 feet (57 m) wide. To the west of the central tower are two octagonal towers. The statues of Justice and Mercy are atop this building. |

Mahalaxmi Racecourse - Mumbai The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a horse racing track in Mahalaxmi neighbourhood, of Mumbai. The track is oval shaped with a to 2400 m straight chute, spread over approx. 325 acres of open land in the heart of Mumbai city. It was created out of a marshy land known as Mahalakshmi Flats, a hundred years ago.
The Mahalaxmi Racecourse is a replica of the Melbourne Racecourse. The ground is run by the Royal Western India Turf Club on lease from the Bombay Municipal Corporation.

Taraporewala Aquarium - Mumbai Taraporewala Aquarium is the sole aquarium in the city of Mumbai, India. Built in 1951 at a cost of Rs 800,000, it hosts marine and freshwater fishes. The aquarium is located on the famous Marine Drive. The aquarium is named after a Parsee phanthropist who donated Rs. 200,000 for the construction. The aquarium is one of the tourist attractions of the city.
There are 100 species of marine and fresh water fish including seven types of coral fish from the Lakshadweep Islands. Attractions include sharks, turtles, rays, moray eels, sea turtles, small starfish and stingrays. Exhibits offer a glimpse of the variety of marine life in the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean. There is also a room with fossils and preserved fish in bottles, along with rare sea shells.

The Gateway of India - Mumbai The Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Bombay, prior to the Delhi Durbar, in December 1911. The foundation stone was laid on 31 March 1911, by the Governor of Bombay Sir George Sydenham Clarke, with the final design of George Wittet sanctioned in August 1914. Between 1915 and 1919 work proceeded on reclamations at Apollo Bundar (Port) for the land on which the gateway and the new sea wall would be built. The foundations were completed in 1920, and construction was finished in 1924. The Gateway was opened on 4 December 1924, by the Viceroy, the Earl of Reading. The last British troops to leave India, the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, passed through the Gateway in a ceremony on 28 February 1948.From here people can visit Elephanta Caves by ferry boats. There are luxury boats which takes visitors around the harbour for couple of hours. Opposite to Gateway stands the Royal Taj Mahal Hotel and Taj Towers which adds to its beauty. In front of Gateway of India, there is a statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. |

Crawford Market - Mumbai The market is situated opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters, just north of Victoria Terminus railway station and west of the J.J.flyover at a busy intersection. The market houses a wholesale fruit, vegetable and poultry market. One end of the market is a pet store. Most of the sellers inside the market nowadays sell imported items such as foods, cosmetics, household and gift items. It was the main wholesale market for fruits in Mumbai until March 1996, when the wholesale traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay).
The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. After India's independence, the market was renamed after Maharashtrian social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. In 1882, the building was the first in India to be lit up by electricity. |

Elephanta Caves - Mumbai Caves located on Elephanta Island in the Arabian Sea near Mumbai, contain Shaivistic high reliefs in stone of Hindu deities important to worshipers of Shiva. The sculptures were created beginning in the late Gupta Empire, or some time after, and at later dates.
The rock cut architecture of the caves has been dated to between the 5th and 8th centuries, although the identity of the original builders is still a subject of debate. The caves are hewn from solid basalt rock. All the caves were also originally painted in the past, but now only traces remain.
The main cave (Cave 1, or the Great Cave) was a Hindu place of worship until Portuguese rule began in 1534, after which the caves suffered severe damage. This cave was renovated in the 1970s

Hanging Gardens - Mumbai Also known as Ferozeshah Mehta Gardens, are terraced gardens perched at the top of Malabar Hill, on its western side, just opposite the Kamala Nehru Park. Kanheri Caves - Mumbai Are a group of rock-cut monuments, located north of Borivali on the western outskirts of Mumbai, deep within the green forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is 6 km from the National Park Main Gate & 7 km from Borivali Station. Tourists can go in after 7.30 a.m. Kanheri Caves are signs of Buddhist influence on art and culture in India. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit word Krishnagiri generally meaning black in colour. They were chiseled out of a massive basaltic rock outcropping. These caves date from 1st century BCE to 9th century CE. In total in the basalt there have been carved 109 caves. Once the caves became permanent monasteries, they began to be carved out of the rock with intricate reliefs of Buddha and the Bodhisattvas carved into the walls. Kanheri had become an important Buddhist settlement on the Konkan coast by the 3rd century A.D. |

Chor Bazaar - Mumbai Located near Bhendi Bazaar in South Mumbai, is one of the largest flea markets in India. The word Chor means "thief" in Hindi-Urdu. Chor bazar is Mumbai's famous Thieves Market where bargain-hungry tourists rummage for Ming vases and Muranos at throwaway prices. The main avenue is Mutton Street, flanked by rows of little antique shops that look like musty attics and sell just about anything at bargain prices from old ship parts, grandfather clocks, gramophones, to crystal chandeliers and old English tea sets antiques at throwaway prices, including colonial-era lamps, Art Deco clocks and trinkets of every kind.
This is basically an "organized" flea market, where one has to rummage through junk and hopefully find treasures. The reason it is known as "thief's market", is because it assumed that goods sold there are stolen. Chor Bazaar is off the beaten path, but everyone knows about it. It is basically a maze of alleys.
Most of proper shops are closed on Friday as this area is in the heartland of one of the largest Muslim populations in Mumbai. There's a saying about this area, if you lose anything in Mumbai you can buy it back from the "chor bazaar"

The history of Mumbai recounts the growth of a collection of seven islands on the west coast of India, Although human habitation existed since the Stone Age, the Kolis, a fishing community, were the earliest known settlers of the islands. The construction of Imperial Bombay continued well into the 20th century. Charles II of England received possession of the islands in 1661 as part of the dowry of Catherine of Braganza, daughter of King John IV of Portugal, and leased them to the British East India Company in 1668. Landmarks points Gateway of India, the General Post Office, the Town Hall (now the Asiatic Library) and the Prince of Wales Museum. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi returned from South Africa and reached Bombay on January 12, 1915. |
